Parent Alienation Syndrome
Parent Alienation Syndrome, first
recognized in 1985, is a form of child abuse sometimes
found in child custody battles. Essentially, it is
the brainwashing of a child by one parent in an attempt to
denigrate the other parent when such denigration is not
warranted. The child must participate in the
vilification of the target parent for PAS to be
present. This syndrome is often overlooked or not
recognized by courts
because it is in a sense created by the adversarial child
custody court system.
Symptoms of PAS in children vary. The child may see one parent as entirely good and the
other as entirely bad. The child may have almost
blind allegiance to the brainwashing parent. In the
later stages, the child may exhibit paranoia and
irrational fears about the target parent. If
you feel your child may be the victim of PAS, talk with a
child custody (family law) attorney. This form of child abuse
must not be overlooked. If
