An annulment is different from a divorce in that an annulment is a legal statement saying that the marriage never existed, that it was never valid to begin with. Usually, the man or the woman in the marriage can ask for the annulment, but in some cases, only one person, the one who was deceived or coerced, can ask for the marriage to be annulled. Parents of underage children can ask for an annulment as well. Most states recognize four grounds for annulment: a lack of mental competency, bigamy, incest and underage participants. Some states also recognize sexual impotency, drug addiction, fraud, coercion and prostitution as grounds.
