Fathers' Rights

Fathers do have legal rights when it comes to custody and visitation. It used to be that custody was routinely awarded to the mother, but that is not the case today.  In all states, courts are willing to order joint legal custody, which means the two parents share decision-making regarding the children's medical, emotional and religious well-being.  About half of the states are willing to order joint physical custody, meaning the children spend a significant amount of time with each parent, but only if both parents agree to it and can communicate effectively.

When it comes to child support, even if a father never married the mother, he is  still required to pay support.  And even if the mother keeps the child from the father, not allowing visitation, the father still must pay support.  Generally, child support does not discriminate between genders.  If you are a father with custody, you have a right to ask for support from the other parent.
