Driving under the influence, or DUI, simply
means driving while impaired. Although most DUI cases
involve being impaired by alcohol, DUI may also refer to being
impaired by prescription medication. While all DUI cases
are serious, extreme DUI cases are even more egregious. DUI penalties vary from state to state, and depending on your
criminal record, i.e, whether or not you have had past DUI
violations, penalties for extreme DUI are usually some of the
toughest.
First time DUI offenders, depending on the
state, will usually spend a few days in jail, pay fines and be
ordered to attend counseling and treatment programs. Most
likely, your driver's license will also be suspended for a
period of time.
Second time DUI offenders face tougher
penalties. Jail time will be longer; fines will increase
and your time in treatment and counseling programs will
lengthen. You will probably have your driver's license
revoked for up to a year, and a locking device will most likely
be placed on your car's ignition. Community service is
also a possibility, and you may be put on probation for up to 5
years.
In most states, an extreme DUI occurs when you
take a roadside breathalizer test and the results are a BAC of
.150% to .199%. At this point fines increase, as does jail
time you, probation time and length of community service
time.
If you are charged with a third DUI, whether it
be a regular DUI or an extreme DUI, in most states you will be
charged with a felony and be facing prison time and fines of
$100,000 or more.
