Civil Rights Violations are Against the Law

Spelled out in the U. S. Constitution's Bill of Rights (the first 10 Amendments) are the civil rights of each and every citizen of the United States.  These include:

1)  The right to freedom of expression (First Amendment)

2)  The right to choose a religion (First Amendment)

3)  The right to bear arms (Second Amendment)

4)  The right to be protected from unreasonable search and seizure (Fourth Amendment)

5)  The right to due process of law (Fifth Amendment)

6)  The right to a speedy trial, a trial by jury and the right to counsel (Sixth Amendment)

7)  The right to be protected from cruel and unusual punishment (Eighth Amendment)

8)  The right to equal protection under the law (Fourteenth Amendment)

While not enshrined in the Constitution, two important legislative acts further protect the civil rights of citizens:

The Civil Rights Act of 1964 prevents discrimination in public schools and colleges, and Title VII of the Civil Rights Act prohibits employment discrimination.
