Changing Your Last Name After Marriage

When a woman marries a man, it is custom that she change her last name to his, but this is not legally required, and since the custom of a woman taking her husband's last name has traditionally been a way to designate her as his property, many smart women today choose keep their last name even after marriage.

If a woman chooses to change her last name to her husband's, she just needs to start using it and continue using it.  There is no official court proceeding needed.  She also needs to inform the Social Security Administration, her credit card companies and other financial institutions of the name change.

A woman can also choose to keep her name and combine it with her husband's last name by using a hyphenated last name.  For example, Mary Lou Smith marries John Anderson and wants to hyphenate her last name.  She just needs to start referring to herself as Mary Lou Smith-Anderson and that becomes her new last name.
